Heating: Furnace Installation In Las Vegas, Summerlin, Henderson, NV and Surrounding Areas
We’re nearing the midway point of summer here in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas. That means fall is right around the corner, with colder nights not far behind. If your furnace is old and worn out, summer is the perfect time to look at a new heating installation. But before you do, you need to know about AFUE first.
What is AFUE?
AFUE stands for “annual fuel utilization efficiency.” According to energy.gov, it is “a measure of how efficient the appliance is in converting the energy in its fuel to heat over the course of a typical year.” In other words, your furnace’s AFUE rating represents how much bang you’re getting for your buck. Literally.
A furnace’s AFUE rating is written as a percentage. For example, if your furnace manages to convert 85% of its fuel into useful heat while only losing 15% out the exhaust, then your furnace would have an AFUE rating of 85%. While it’s not a complex equation, it does have a lot of significance if you’re in the market for a new heating installation.
What Makes a Furnace High Efficiency?
Virtually all modern day furnaces are manufactured to have a high AFUE in accordance with government regulations. For example, in order to be considered an Energy Star product, all heating installations in the northern US are required to involve a gas furnace at 95% AFUE or greater. For southern states, including Nevada, new gas furnaces are required to have a minimum AFUE of 90%.
The current government minimum for non Energy Star mid-range efficiency is 80%. Anything above 90% is considered to be a high-efficiency furnace. High-efficiency furnaces are defined by their extra amenities such as multiple heat exchangers, a multi-stage heating cycle, and smart controls.
